Congressman Tours Monolithic Dome School

U.S. Rep. Ruben Hinojosa, D-Mercedes, was back in his home district recently handing out checks to local organizations that have qualified for federal grant money. Congressman Hinojosa also took the opportunity to tour a new Monolithic Dome school building that was funded by federal grant money last year - the Woodsboro gymnasium/community center.

Congressman Hinojosa stopped off at the new building, which was funded by a $1.5 million grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Since Woodsboro is located near the Texas Gulf Coast and has sustained damage from Hurricane Ike and other severe storms, the building will double as a community disaster shelter.

“It’s surprising to me and it’s encouraging that he knows what’s going on and his staff is aware of the good things going on throughout the district,” Steven Self, Woodsboro school district superintendent, told the Victoria Advocate “It’s good to be recognized even when you’re in a small place.”

In addition to touring the Woodsboro school building, Congressman Hinojosa presented a $60,000 grant check to the local fire department, and a $100,000 USDA housing-preservation grant to Refugio County. “The funding will help the entire community,” he said. “Please take pride in your beautiful city, county and especially the people here in Refugio.”
