Woodsboro, Texas ISD: Going Even Greener! Because the Monolithic Dome can provide near-absolute protection and because Woodsboro, Texas is in a hurricane-prone area, in 2009 Woodsboro ISD received a FEMA grant of $1.5 million to build a gym/disaster shelter. In October 2011, Woodsboro dedicated their 20,000-square-foot gym. The energy efficiency of Woodsboro’s Monolithic Dome intensifies their greenness and actually helped them get a second grant to install solar. The gym is the designated hurricane shelter for the school and the community. In case of a hurricane and an order to evacuate, DuPont’s crew of first responders will head for this gym, shelter there till the hurricane passes, and then assess damages at DuPont’s facility. Superintendent Steven Self estimates that power for a conventional gym of the same size as their dome would average $2,128 per month. The dome’s power bills are coming in at about $500 – even for hot August.
